Cochin Corporation Co-operative Bank was envisaged in 1980 by Mr M.M. Abdul Rahiman IPS who was a forerunner in the field of Co-operative Movement, Sports and Education. The bank was renamed as Cochin Service Co-operative Bank (CSCB) in the year 1982. CSCB started its operation in a rented building at Market Road, Ernakulam with an initial capital of Rs 52,925/- collected from 111 members. In the initial phase, bank provided loan to small merchants of Ernakulam market and other parts of the city. The merchants were struggling to get finance for their business as they were denied loans from other banks and at that juncture CSCB came to their aid. Over the years, bank established its operations as there were more investment from account holders. As the operation grew, bank moved to a rented building near to Kalabhavan, Ernakulam North in the year 1988.
As the result of the earnest efforts from the founder Mr M.M. Abdul Rahiman and the board members, the enterprise moved its operation to own building at Manappatiparambu, Kaloor by acquiring 14.028 cents of land at a cost of Rs 27 lakhs. The foundation for the building was laid by Mr. M.M. Abdul Rahiman on 1st January 2000 in a function presided by Adv M.E. Abdul Khader. The head office ‘Co Bank Tower’ was completed at a cost of Rs 126 lakhs and was inaugurated on 28th January 2002 by Mr. M.V. Raghavan, Minister for Corporation & Port, Government of Kerala in a function presided by Prof. K.V. Thomas, Minister for Fisheries & Tourism, Government of Kerala.
The bank has since grown to have 3788 A class, 9 B class and 4466 C class members with an investment of Rs 30 crores. To this date, bank has not taken any loan from an individual or an organization. CSCB continued to grow and opened its first branch in Mattanchery on 10th August 2001.The bank provides employment to 6 permanent staff and 3 commissioned staff. In 2017, CSCB started operations of Co Bank Public School at its head office premises.
Mr. M.M. Abdul Rahiman heralded the bank to its success through his vision, organisational skills, and leadership attributes. He was the President of the bank from its inception till his demise on 22nd April 2022. During his tenure as President for over 40 years, the Director Board was constituted unopposed in every term. CSCB held its first contested election through a secret ballot system involving all its members on 28th May 2022. Post election, a new Director Board was constituted and the Board unanimously elected Mr. M.A. Haris Rehman as President and Mr. P.S. Ashique as Secretary.On 28th April 2023, the renovated head office renamed as ‘M.M. Abdul Rahiman Memorial Co Bank Tower’ and newly constructed ‘M.M. Abdul Rahiman Memorial Hall’ was inaugurated by Mr. V.N. Vasavan, Minister for Cooperation & Registration, Government of Kerala in a function presided by Mr. T.J. Vinod, MLA, Ernakulam.
